Air Conditioning Installation In Unimog 1550.

Engine Compartment:

Above is where the compressor goes.  The compressor that came with the kit was made in Korea and I am

told by my air condiltioning expert it is the same type used by GM.  The problem here is that the resorvior for

the ether injector is mounted to the bolts that are  used by the mounting bracket.  Since the ether injector is not

hooked up to the manifold that port was used for the sensor for the truck type injector pump I just took if off.

I will save it just in case I am foolish enough to go to cold climates.  The other problem is that there is a metal coolent

line (under the ether injector bracket) that is also in the way.  This is for the espar diesel coolant heater mounted

under the cab.  I took this off and rerouted using a rubber hose.

Here is where the compressor mount attaches.  The bolt holes are on two different planes.  The back bolts

have to go through the bracket that hold the fuel filters.  I had to make a spacer in order to get a solid surface

for the bracket to attach to.  One my truck the spacer measured  .803 inches.

The bracket is a very solid piece of steel and bolted right up.  It has the adjuster attached.  It is a very nice

piece of work.  Another problem is the oil dipstick.  I had to bend it a little bit to clear and bracket and later

had to bend it more to clear belt.

Here is a picture of the unit bolted up.  The kit included the pulley and longer bolts to bolt onto the water pump

pulley.  The kit also included the 4 bolts to bolt on the mounting bracket and all the bolts for the compressor.

The lower bolt on the compressor is a 10mm allen head.  I replaced it with a hex head one because you can

not get to it since the belt is in the way.  The kit also included the fan belt.

The part is the engine compartment was the dryer.  The manufacture recommends is to be placed at the

condensor on the outflow side.  The dryer has site glass on top of it that you look at to tell when the

system is fully charged.  Since the condensor is mounted under the bed putting it there would make it

hard to see the site glass.  Under the hood there is this fender mount with two holes in it I thought that

would be a great place to put the dryer.  It would be easy to see the site glass and keep it protected of things.

The dryer unit has an input and output.  The one I had was not labeled.  If you hook it up wrong you may

screw thing up.  I sent this picture to the manufacture of the kit and they sent back this picture labeled.

This is a picture of the finished set up. You have to make a bracked to hook up the dryer to the fender bracket

but everything fits in nice.  If  you had a hydraulic set up  the hydraulic tank might be in the way.
